CEPI and WHO Urge Coordinated Research and Action
Urgent Appeal to Governments and Scientists
WEB At the Global Pandemic Preparedness Summit 2024 held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) issued a clarion call for governments and scientists around the world to join forces in the fight against future pandemics.
The joint statement, which was delivered by WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and CEPI CEO Dr. Richard Hatchett, emphasized the urgent need for a globally coordinated, collaborative research agenda to prepare for potential pandemics.
"The COVID-19 pandemic has taught us that we cannot afford to be complacent when it comes to pandemic preparedness," said Dr. Ghebreyesus.
Dr. Hatchett added, "By investing in research now, we can develop the tools and technologies we need to prevent and control future pandemics, saving lives and protecting the global economy."
