Early Life and Education
JD Vance, born James Donald Bowman on August 2, 1984, in Middletown, Ohio, is an American politician, author, and retired Marine Corps veteran. Vance is the son of Beverly Ann Bowman and James Donald Bowman, who were divorced when Vance was young.
Vance attended Middletown High School and graduated in 2003. He went on to Yale University, where he graduated summa cum laude with a degree in political science. Vance then earned his law degree from Yale Law School, where he was an editor of the Yale Law Journal.
Political Career and Military Service
Vance served as a Marine Corps officer from 2003 to 2007, during which time he was deployed to Iraq. After leaving the military, Vance worked as a venture capitalist and as an author. He wrote the best-selling memoir "Hillbilly Elegy" in 2016, which recounts his experiences growing up in rural Appalachia.
Vance entered politics in 2018 when he ran for the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate seat from Ohio. He was endorsed by President Donald Trump and won the nomination. Vance was elected to the Senate in 2022, defeating Democratic incumbent Sherrod Brown.
